Project Details

When Rebekah and Ryan Fellers bought their 1890s Italianate home in Newport, KY, they were actually pleased that it had no historic details. “I prefer a modern aesthetic,” says Rebekah, an interior designer with her own firm, Rebekah Fellers Interiors, in nearby Covington. She and her husband, an architect, loved the location and wanted to design a kitchen with their own signature.

The former kitchen included such eyesores as a dropped acoustic-tile ceiling, faux-wood vinyl floors, an old sink, a freestanding stove, and a staircase right in the center that led to a second-floor apartment. With their desire to “carve out a modern oasis,” the couple eliminated the stairs and expanded the space, creating a 15- by 15-foot user-friendly layout. Removing the acoustic tiles took the 8-foot ceiling to a much more gracious 10-foot height.
