Perched on a bluff overlooking the Block Island Sound, the property is a flag lot at the end of a new subdivision, bordered on three sides by water, wetland, and woods. The client asked us to build a house with minimal impact on the pristine landscape, maximum exposure to the views, and all the amenities of a year round Hamptons vacation home.
The basic requirements of each space were considered integrally with the effects of sunlight, breezes, and views. The house was conceived as a lens, continually magnifying the subtle changes in the surrounding environment.
The L-shaped plan is divided into public and private wings. Two indoor/outdoor zones on the two levels define the public areas. The upstairs zone includes the kitchen, dining area, living area, and a deck. This section of the house is cantilevered over the hillside and offers the most panoramic views. The downstairs public room includes the family room, outdoor living room, pool, and sunbathing deck. T... more

I agree, the house does a wonderful job of coexisting with the natural setting. The landscaping is also great, the tree in the backyard area that shows up in several of the pictures looks like something Ansel Adams would admire.
Certainly with a prime site like this you have to embrace your surroundings. To me, this house has two main ways of doing that. The open nature of the structure, it’s ample terrace’s and wide panoramic windows, certainly bring the scenery in. But also the actually layout, the jutting public wing that reaches out down the shoreline, is a phenomenal way to combine the house with the landscape.
